Origins of Visoki Dečani

1335

Visoki Decani is a Serbian Orthodox monastery in western Kosovo, built by King Stefan Decanski and completed by his son Stefan Dusan. The church was built by a Franciscan friar from Kotor, Vita, in a mixture of Romanesque and Byzantine styles, in marble blocks of different colours. Its interior is covered with an exceptionally large number of frescoes, with more than a thousand portraits and many scenes, which make up one of the best preserved cycles of Byzantine painting of the period. The monastery houses the relics of King Stefan. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been guarded by international peacekeepers since the late 1990s.
