Construction of Riga Castle

1330

Riga Castle was built by the Livonian Order, a branch of the Teutonic Knights, on the banks of the Daugava river, and became the seat of the Master of the order. The citizens of Riga resented the order's power, and in the late fifteenth century they destroyed the castle, which the order rebuilt after a conflict. Through the following centuries, with the changes of rule over Livonia, it served as the residence of Polish, Swedish and Russian governors. Its present form is the result of many alterations and restorations, and it houses several museums. Since Latvia regained independence at the beginning of the 1990s, it has been the official residence of the President of Latvia.
