Construction of Sheikh Safi al-Din Khānegāh and Shrine Ensemble

1334

The Sheikh Safi al-Din Khānegāh and Shrine Ensemble is a religious complex in Ardabil, in northwestern Iran, built around the tomb of the Sufi master Safi al-Din Ardabili, who died in the early fourteenth century and was the ancestor of the Safavid dynasty. His order's leaders later rose to rule Iran, and the Safavid shahs, particularly Shah Abbas I, enlarged and decorated the complex. It includes a mausoleum, a mosque, a hall for Sufi ceremonies, and the Chini Khaneh, a porcelain house in which Chinese porcelain was displayed. The buildings are decorated with fine tilework and calligraphy. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010.
