The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a fortified monastery in Sergiev Posad, northeast of Moscow, and the most important monastic center of the Russian Orthodox Church. It was founded by the monk Sergius of Radonezh, who withdrew to the forest to live as a hermit and attracted followers who formed a community around him. The monastery became closely tied to the rulers of Moscow, and tradition holds that Sergius blessed Grand Prince Dmitry Donskoy before the battle of Kulikovo in 1380. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was surrounded by thick walls and withstood a long Polish-Lithuanian siege during the Time of Troubles. The icon painter Andrei Rublev is associated with its Trinity Cathedral, and the complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a major pilgrimage destination.
