Ibn Khaldun was born on 27 May 1332 in Tunis. An Arab historian and thinker born in Tunis, Ibn Khaldun served as an official and diplomat for rulers in North Africa and Granada before settling in Cairo, where he became a judge. His Muqaddimah, the introduction to his universal history, set out a method for analysing societies, with ideas about group solidarity, called asabiyyah, the rise and decline of dynasties, and the role of economic life. He met Timur outside Damascus in 1401 during the siege of that city. Modern scholars often regard him as a precursor of sociology, economics and the philosophy of history. He died in Cairo.
