Vijayanagara Empire

from 1336 to 1646

The Vijayanagara Empire was a powerful kingdom in southern India, founded by the brothers Harihara I and Bukka Raya, with its capital at Vijayanagara, near present-day Hampi in Karnataka. It arose as a Hindu power at a time when the Delhi Sultanate and then the Bahmani Sultanate dominated much of the Deccan, and it controlled most of peninsular India south of the Krishna River. It reached its greatest strength under Krishnadevaraya in the early sixteenth century. Foreign visitors described a rich, well-planned capital with large markets, and its rulers patronised temple building, literature in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil and Sanskrit. A coalition of Deccan sultanates defeated it at Talikota in 1565, after which the capital was sacked and the empire declined.
