Prague, today the capital of the Czech Republic, grew from early Slavic settlements on both banks of the Vltava river. In the centuries after the 8th, fortified sites on the hills later known as Prague Castle and Vyšehrad stood on opposite sides of the river, and a market and trading settlement developed below the castle. The Přemyslid dynasty made Prague Castle the seat of the Bohemian rulers in the late 9th century, and a bishopric was founded in 973. The city flourished under Charles IV in the 14th century, when it became the capital of the Holy Roman Empire and gained Charles University, founded in 1348, and the Charles Bridge, begun in 1357.
