Carolingian Empire

from 800 CE to 887 CE

The Carolingian Empire was the realm of the Frankish kings of the Carolingian dynasty after Charlemagne was crowned emperor by Pope Leo III in Rome on Christmas Day. It included much of western and central Europe, from northern Spain to the Elbe and from the North Sea to central Italy, and it saw a revival of learning and the arts known as the Carolingian Renaissance. After the death of Charlemagne's son Louis the Pious, his sons fought over the inheritance, and in 843 the Treaty of Verdun divided the empire into three parts, which are seen as the origins of France and Germany. The empire was briefly reunited under Charles the Fat and then broke up in 887.
