Origins of Major League Soccer

17 December 1993

Major League Soccer was founded as the top professional soccer league in the United States, a condition set by FIFA when it awarded the 1994 World Cup to the country. The league played its first season in 1996 with ten teams, aiming to build the game after the failure of the earlier North American Soccer League. In its early years it struggled with financial problems and falling attendance, but it stabilised, built soccer-specific stadiums and expanded steadily, adding Canadian clubs. The arrival of famous players such as David Beckham in 2007 raised its profile, and Lionel Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023. It now has around thirty teams in the United States and Canada.
