1994 Genocide against Tutsi

1994

The genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda took place in 1994, between April and July, when extremist Hutu leaders and militias set out to kill the country's Tutsi minority and moderate Hutu. It began after the plane carrying President Juvenal Habyarimana was shot down on 6 April. Soldiers, police and militias such as the Interahamwe organized the killings, and ordinary civilians were incited, often by radio broadcasts, to take part. Around eight hundred thousand people are estimated to have been killed in roughly a hundred days, though estimates vary. The United Nations and the major powers were widely criticized for failing to intervene. The killing ended when the Rwandan Patriotic Front, led by Paul Kagame, took control of the country.
