Holocene calendar

30 December 1993

The Holocene calendar, also called the Human Era calendar, is a system of year numbering that adds 10,000 years to the usual Gregorian year, so that year 1 of the Human Era falls near the start of the Holocene geological epoch. It was proposed by the scientist Cesare Emiliani, who argued that it would give a single, neutral chronology without the break at the year 1, in which dates before and after the birth of Christ run in opposite directions. Supporters say it places the beginning of agriculture and the first permanent settlements in a single continuous sequence. It has never been used officially but has a small following.
