Federico Fellini died on 31 October 1993 in Rome, aged 73. An Italian filmmaker from Rimini, Fellini began as a screenwriter and became one of the most original directors of the postwar period. His early films, such as La Strada and Nights of Cabiria, belonged to a poetic neorealism, while La Dolce Vita (1960) captured the glitter and emptiness of Roman high society. His film 8½ is a dreamlike reflection on a director's creative crisis, and Amarcord recalls his childhood on the Adriatic coast. He won four Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film and an honorary Oscar in 1993. His carnivalesque, personal style gave the adjective Felliniesque to the language. His wife, Giulietta Masina, starred in several of his films.
