The Toronto International Film Festival, now one of the most important film festivals in the world, was first held in October 1976 under the name Festival of Festivals. It was started by a group of Toronto film enthusiasts, including Bill Marshall, Henk van der Kolk and Dusty Cohl, who aimed to bring together the best films shown at other festivals. It took its present name in 1994. Unlike Cannes or Venice, it does not give a formal jury competition for its main program but an audience award, the People's Choice Award, which has often been a predictor of Oscar success. It is held every September.
