Origins of Champions Hockey League

2014

The Champions Hockey League is an annual European ice hockey competition played between the leading club teams from many European countries, mainly Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Czechia and Germany, along with teams from other leagues. It was launched in 2014 by the leagues and clubs themselves, in association with the International Ice Hockey Federation, as a successor to the European Trophy and to earlier unsuccessful attempts to create a European club championship. Clubs qualify through their domestic performance, and the competition runs from the late summer through the winter. Teams from Sweden and Finland have won most of the titles, and the National Hockey League is not involved.
