Introduction of Dogecoin

8 December 2013

Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency created on 8 December 2013 by the software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, who began it as a joke. It was based on the Litecoin software, and its logo features the Shiba Inu dog from the popular Doge internet meme. Although it started as a parody of the cryptocurrency boom, it attracted an online community that used it for tipping and for raising money for charity, including funding for a Jamaican bobsled team. Its price rose sharply in 2021, partly because of posts by Elon Musk, and then fell again. Unlike Bitcoin, it has no fixed limit on the number of coins that can be created, and it is known for being very volatile.
