Construction of Shanghai Tower

2014

Shanghai Tower is a megatall skyscraper in the Lujiazui financial district of Pudong, Shanghai. At about 632 metres it is the tallest building in China and one of the tallest in the world, standing beside the Jin Mao Tower and the Shanghai World Financial Center. The design by the American firm Gensler features a spiralling, twisting form meant to reduce wind loads, with a double-skin glass facade that wraps around the building and helps save energy. The tower mixes offices, a hotel, shops, cultural spaces and observation decks, including one of the highest in the world. Its construction took several years and involved a deep foundation to support the structure on Shanghai's soft soil.
