Discovery of Gliese 832 c

2014

Gliese 832 c was announced in 2014 as a planet orbiting the red dwarf Gliese 832, about sixteen light-years from the Sun, in the constellation Grus. Found by an international team using radial velocity measurements, it appeared to be a super-Earth of a few Earth masses located in the star's habitable zone, where liquid water could exist. Scientists cautioned that it would receive more energy than Earth and might have a thick, hot atmosphere, which would make it more like Venus. The star also has a larger gas giant planet, Gliese 832 b. More recent work has questioned whether planet c exists, suggesting that its signal could come from stellar activity.
