Origins of Canadian football

9 November 1861

Canadian football is a sport related to American football and rugby, played with twelve players a side on a field larger than the American one, with three downs to gain ten yards. It grew out of rugby football played in Canada in the 19th century, and the first recorded game was played at University College in Toronto in 1861, using rules based on rugby. Over the following decades Canadian clubs and universities developed their own rules, moving away from rugby and borrowing from American football. The main professional competition is the Canadian Football League, whose championship trophy is the Grey Cup. The sport has a special place in Canadian sporting culture.
