The Russian State Library in Moscow is the national library of Russia and one of the largest libraries in the world. It grew out of the library of the Rumyantsev Museum, which opened to the public in 1862 and was based on the collection of Count Nikolay Rumyantsev. After the Revolution it was reorganized and became the Lenin Library, taking over much of the historical Pashkov House, a neoclassical building near the Kremlin. Over the 20th century it gained a huge main building and enormous reading rooms. It was given its present name in 1992, and it holds many millions of items.
