The Toronto Stock Exchange is Canada's principal stock exchange, founded in the nineteenth century by a group of local brokers who met in an office in Toronto to trade shares, initially of a small number of companies. It grew with the city and the country, and in time overtook the exchange in Montreal as the country's leading market, especially after the mining and oil booms. It became electronic in the 1990s, and in 2008 the exchange's parent company merged with the Montreal Exchange to create the TMX Group. The exchange is a leading market for mining and energy companies, and its S&P/TSX Composite Index is the main measure of the market in Canada.
