Operation Overlord was the code name for the Allied invasion of Normandy and the ensuing campaign to free German-occupied France. It began on D-Day, when American, British, Canadian and other Allied troops landed on five beaches, codenamed Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword, after airborne forces had dropped inland. The naval and amphibious phase was called Operation Neptune, and the whole effort was led by General Dwight Eisenhower. After the landings the Allies fought a hard battle of attrition in the Norman countryside before breaking out in late July. Paris was liberated in August, and the campaign opened a second major front against Germany in the west.
