The Russian Revolution was a period of upheaval that ended the rule of the tsars and led to the creation of the world's first communist state. In February 1917, strikes and mutinies in Petrograd forced Tsar Nicholas II to abdicate, and a Provisional Government took charge, but it continued the unpopular war with Germany. In October the Bolsheviks under Vladimir Lenin seized power, and they soon withdrew from the war and moved against their opponents. A civil war between the Red Army and the anti-Bolshevik White forces followed, with foreign intervention, and it ended in a Bolshevik victory. The Soviet Union was formed in 1922, and the revolution's effects on world politics lasted throughout the twentieth century.
