Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

1988

The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was a territorial and ethnic dispute between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which had an Armenian majority but lay inside the Soviet republic of Azerbaijan. In 1988, the regional authorities demanded transfer to Armenia, and violence broke out. As the Soviet Union collapsed, the conflict became a full war in the early 1990s, ending in 1994 with an Armenian victory and a ceasefire, with Armenian forces holding the region and surrounding districts. A second war in 2020 allowed Azerbaijan to recover much of the territory, with a ceasefire brokered by Russia, and in 2023 Azerbaijan took the rest, after which most of the Armenian population left.
