Creation of Windows 2.0

9 December 1987

Windows 2.0 was a version of Microsoft's graphical operating environment for the personal computer, released in late 1987. Unlike Windows 1.0, which tiled windows side by side, it allowed windows to overlap, and it added keyboard shortcuts, improved graphics support and desktop icons. It ran on top of MS-DOS and was designed for Intel 8086 and 8088 processors. Later versions called Windows/286 and Windows/386 took advantage of more advanced chips. It was moderately successful and led to a legal dispute with Apple over the resemblance to the Macintosh interface, and it paved the way for the much more popular Windows 3.0.
