First Intifada

from 8 December 1987 to 13 September 1993

The First Intifada was a mass Palestinian uprising against Israeli military occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, which began after an incident in the Jabalia refugee camp and spread rapidly. Its methods included strikes, boycotts, demonstrations and stone throwing, and also, at times, firebombs and attacks, and it was organized by local committees and the underground leadership of the movement. Israel responded with curfews, mass arrests and the use of force, and many Palestinians and a smaller number of Israelis were killed. The uprising drew international attention to the Palestinian cause and helped bring about the Madrid conference and then the secret talks that produced the Oslo Accords. Hamas emerged as a force during these years.
