Founding of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

1988

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was set up in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme to give governments clear scientific information about climate change. The panel does not carry out its own research. Instead, thousands of scientists volunteer to review and assess published studies and write comprehensive assessment reports, which are checked by governments before they are approved. Its first report in 1990 helped lead to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, and later reports informed the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement. In 2007 it shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore. Its conclusions have grown steadily firmer that human activity is warming the planet.
