Creation of GNU Octave

1988

GNU Octave is a free numerical computing environment and language that is largely compatible with MATLAB. Its development began with John W. Eaton, who was then working at the University of Texas, as a way to help students solve chemical reactor design problems, and the first public release came a few years later. It became part of the GNU Project and is distributed under the GNU General Public License. Scientists, engineers and students use it for linear algebra, solving equations, optimisation and plotting. Because many MATLAB scripts run on it with few changes, it has served as an accessible free alternative in teaching and research.
