The Mahsa Amini protests were a wave of demonstrations across Iran that began after the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish-Iranian woman, in the custody of the morality police, who had detained her for allegedly wearing the mandatory hijab improperly. Protests started in her home region of Kurdistan and spread across the country, led largely by women and young people under the slogan Woman, Life, Freedom. Women removed and burned headscarves in public, and strikes and student protests followed. The authorities responded with arrests, internet shutdowns and force, and human rights groups reported hundreds of protesters killed, with some later executed. The movement did not topple the government, but it changed public attitudes about compulsory veiling.
