Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman also known as Jina, was detained in Tehran by the morality police, the Guidance Patrol, for allegedly wearing her hijab improperly. She collapsed at a detention centre and died in hospital three days later. Authorities said she had suffered a medical condition, but her family and many Iranians believed that she had been beaten. Her death triggered the largest wave of protest in Iran in years, under the slogan Woman, Life, Freedom, led largely by women and young people. Security forces responded with force, and many protesters were killed or arrested. The protests also brought wide international attention and sanctions.
