Lodi dynasty

from 1451 to 1526

The Lodi dynasty was the last dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate, founded by Bahlul Khan Lodi, an Afghan noble who took the throne from the Sayyids. It was the first Afghan dynasty to rule in northern India. Bahlul and his son Sikandar Lodi extended the sultanate across the Punjab, Jaunpur and Bihar, and Sikandar built the city of Agra and ruled with a firm hand. His successor Ibrahim Lodi had trouble with the Afghan nobles, who resented his attempts to centralise power. Some of them, including Daulat Khan Lodi, appealed to Babur, the ruler of Kabul, who defeated and killed Ibrahim at the First Battle of Panipat in 1526 and founded the Mughal Empire.
