Isabella I of Castile was born on 22 April 1451 in Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de Gracia. Queen of Castile, Isabella I came to the throne in 1474 and, with her husband Ferdinand II of Aragon, laid the foundations of a unified Spanish state, an alliance known as the Catholic Monarchs. They completed the Reconquista with the conquest of the kingdom of Granada in 1492, established the Spanish Inquisition, and expelled the Jews who refused to convert. She sponsored the voyage of Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic, which opened the way to Spanish colonization of the Americas. She was also a patron of learning and a reformer of the Church, and her daughter Joanna and her grandson Charles V succeeded her.
