The Berlin Palace was the main residence of the Brandenburg electors, the Prussian kings and the German emperors, in the heart of the city on the Spree Island. Building began in the mid-15th century as a castle and the complex was transformed in the early 18th century into a baroque palace by Andreas Schlüter and Johann Friedrich Eosander. The last German emperor lived there until the revolution of 1918, when Karl Liebknecht proclaimed a socialist republic from one of its balconies. The palace was badly damaged in the Second World War and demolished in 1950 by the East German authorities, who later built the Palace of the Republic on the site. That building was itself torn down, and the palace was reconstructed with three baroque facades and opened as the Humboldt Forum.
