Launch of RT

15 September 2005

RT, originally called Russia Today, is an international television network funded by the Russian government. It began broadcasting in English and was later joined by channels in Arabic, Spanish, French and German, and by online video services. Its editor-in-chief from the start was Margarita Simonyan. RT describes its mission as presenting a Russian perspective on world events, while critics in many countries have called it an instrument of state propaganda and disinformation. Western regulators questioned its coverage and ownership, and after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the European Union, the United Kingdom and other jurisdictions banned or restricted its broadcasts.
