Kyrgyz Revolution of 2010

from 6 April 2010 to 14 December 2010

The Kyrgyz Revolution of 2010, also called the April events, began with protests in Talas against rising utility prices and corruption, which spread to the capital Bishkek, where security forces fired on demonstrators. President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who had himself come to power in the Tulip Revolution of 2005, fled the country, and an interim government was formed under Roza Otunbayeva. In June, ethnic violence between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks in the south, around Osh and Jalal-Abad, caused many deaths and displaced many people. A referendum later that month approved a new constitution creating a parliamentary system, and elections in the autumn led to the formation of a coalition government.
