Smolensk air disaster

10 April 2010

The Smolensk air disaster occurred when a Polish Air Force Tupolev Tu-154 crashed while trying to land in fog at Smolensk North airfield in western Russia. On board were Polish President Lech Kaczynski, his wife Maria and many senior officials, military commanders and public figures, who were traveling to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre. All aboard were killed. Russian and Polish investigations found that the crew had continued the descent in poor visibility, though they differed on the roles of air traffic control and the pilots. The disaster led to national mourning in Poland and to long-running political dispute, as well as conspiracy theories that investigators have not supported.
