2010 United Kingdom general election

6 May 2010

The 2010 United Kingdom general election was held in May, and its result was the first hung parliament in Britain since February 1974, with no party winning an overall majority in the House of Commons. The Conservatives under David Cameron won the most seats, but fell short of a majority, while the Labour Party of Prime Minister Gordon Brown lost many seats, and the Liberal Democrats under Nick Clegg won fewer than expected. After several days of negotiation, the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats formed a coalition government, the first peacetime coalition in Britain since the 1930s. Brown resigned as prime minister and Cameron took over. The coalition governed until 2015 and introduced fixed-term parliaments, as well as a referendum on the voting system in 2011, which was rejected.
