The Kingdom of Scotland was an independent state in the northern part of the island of Great Britain. Its beginnings are traditionally linked to Kenneth MacAlpin, who united the Picts and the Scots in the ninth century, producing a kingdom that was called Alba. Scotland defended its independence in the Wars of Independence against England in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, led by William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, who won at Bannockburn. In 1603 James VI of Scotland inherited the English throne, and the two crowns were united. The two kingdoms merged into the Kingdom of Great Britain under the Acts of Union.
