Construction of Dome of the Rock

691 CE

The Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine on the Temple Mount, known to Muslims as the Haram al-Sharif, in the Old City of Jerusalem. It was built in the 690s by the Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik and completed in 691 or 692. The shrine is an octagonal building covered by a golden dome and surrounds a rock sacred to Muslims, who associate it with the Prophet Muhammad's night journey, and to Jews, who identify the site as the place of the Temple. It is not a mosque but a commemorative shrine, and is among the oldest surviving Islamic monuments. Its exterior is covered by tiles from the Ottoman period, and the interior is decorated with mosaics and inscriptions from the Quran.
