West Francia was the western part of the Carolingian empire, created when the Treaty of Verdun divided the empire of Charlemagne among the three grandsons. It was given to Charles the Bald and covered most of what is now France, while the central part and the eastern part went to others and became the origin of the later German lands. The kingdom was weakened by Viking raids, the growing power of local counts and dukes, and quarrels within the Carolingian family, so that kings often had little authority beyond their own domains. In 987, after the last Carolingian king died, the nobles chose Hugh Capet as king, founding the Capetian dynasty, and West Francia gave way to the Kingdom of France.
