Great Moravia

from 833 CE to 907 CE

Great Moravia was a Slavic state in Central Europe in the ninth century, based on the middle Danube region around the Morava river, in what is now the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It rose under Mojmir I, who united Moravian and neighbouring Nitra territories, and reached its height under Svatopluk I, whose realm extended over much of Bohemia, Pannonia and Silesia. Prince Rastislav invited the Byzantine missionaries Cyril and Methodius, who introduced Slavic liturgy and created the Glagolitic alphabet, an important step in the history of Slavic literacy. After Svatopluk's death the state was weakened by internal quarrels, and it collapsed when it was attacked by the Magyar tribes, who settled in the Carpathian Basin.
