East Francia

from 843 CE to 962 CE

East Francia was the eastern part of the Carolingian Empire after it was divided by the Treaty of Verdun among the grandsons of Charlemagne. It was given to Louis the German and covered the lands east of the Rhine, with the duchies of Saxony, Bavaria, Swabia and Franconia, populated by Germanic peoples. It is regarded as the forerunner of the medieval Kingdom of Germany. After the Carolingian line died out, the dukes elected a new king, Conrad of Franconia, and then Henry the Fowler of Saxony. Henry's son Otto I defeated the Magyars at the Lechfeld and was crowned emperor in Rome, which is taken as the start of the Holy Roman Empire.
