Kingdom of Hungary

from 1000 to 1946

The Kingdom of Hungary was a state in Central Europe founded when Stephen I was crowned king, with a crown sent by the pope, and so brought the Hungarians into the Christian community of Europe. It was ruled first by the Arpad dynasty, and later by kings from other houses, including the Angevins and Matthias Corvinus. It was invaded by the Mongols in the thirteenth century and, in 1526, the Ottomans defeated the Hungarians at Mohacs, after which the kingdom was divided between the Ottomans, the Habsburgs and Transylvania. It was later part of the Habsburg monarchy and, from 1867, Austria-Hungary. It remained a kingdom, under a regent, between the world wars, and was abolished after the Second World War.
