Kingdom of France

from 987 CE to 1791

The Kingdom of France was the monarchy that ruled France for most of the period from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution. It is conventionally dated from the election of Hugh Capet as king in 987, who founded the Capetian dynasty, whose branches provided the kings for the following eight centuries. The early kings controlled only a small domain around Paris, but they gradually extended royal power over the great duchies and counties, a process that continued through the Hundred Years' War against England. Under Louis XIV in the seventeenth century the monarchy became the model of absolutism. It was overturned by the Revolution, and although it was briefly restored after Napoleon's defeat, it finally ended in 1848.
