The High Middle Ages is the period of European history following the early Middle Ages and preceding the late Middle Ages, and it is generally dated from around the year 1000 to about 1300. It was a time of population growth, agricultural improvement and the expansion of towns and trade. Kings and the papacy asserted new powers, as seen in the Investiture Controversy, the Crusades and the growth of royal governments in England and France. Universities were founded at Bologna, Paris and Oxford, Gothic cathedrals were built, and scholastic philosophy flourished with figures such as Thomas Aquinas. The period closed with the famines and crises of the early fourteenth century.
