The Kingdom of Bavaria was created when Napoleon raised the Elector of Bavaria to the rank of king, as a reward for his support, after the Treaty of Pressburg. It became a member of the Confederation of the Rhine and later of the German Confederation, and it received a liberal constitution in 1818. Its capital Munich was transformed into a major cultural center under kings such as Ludwig I, and later Ludwig II, who built fairy-tale castles such as Neuschwanstein. In 1871 Bavaria joined the German Empire but kept special rights, including its own army and postal service in peacetime. The monarchy ended during the revolution at the end of the First World War, when King Ludwig III left Munich, and Bavaria became a republic within Germany.
