The Russo-Turkish War of 1806 to 1812 was fought between the Russian and Ottoman empires during the Napoleonic Wars. It began after the Ottoman sultan, influenced by France, dismissed the pro-Russian rulers of Moldavia and Wallachia, and Russian forces then occupied the Danubian Principalities. Fighting took place along the Danube and in the Caucasus, and there were naval engagements in the Aegean and near the Dardanelles. As Napoleon prepared to invade Russia in 1812, the Russian commander Mikhail Kutuzov defeated the Ottomans and concluded the Treaty of Bucharest, by which Russia gained Bessarabia, the eastern part of Moldavia. The settlement freed Russian troops for the coming struggle against Napoleon.
