The Austrian Empire was proclaimed in 1804 by Francis II, the last Holy Roman Emperor, who took the title Emperor of Austria as Francis I in response to Napoleon's elevation to emperor of the French. It brought together the Habsburg lands, including Austria, Bohemia, Hungary, parts of northern Italy and Galicia, a multinational realm with many languages. Two years later, in 1806, the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved. The empire was led through the Napoleonic Wars and the post-1815 order by Prince Metternich, and it faced revolutions in 1848 and defeat by Prussia in 1866. After the Compromise of 1867 with Hungary, it was reorganized as the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary.
