Battle of Austerlitz

2 December 1805

The Battle of Austerlitz, also called the Battle of the Three Emperors, was fought in Moravia, in what is now the Czech Republic, between Napoleon's French army and the combined forces of Russia, under Tsar Alexander I, and Austria, under Emperor Francis II. Napoleon deliberately weakened his right flank to lure the allies into attacking it, then struck at the centre, on the Pratzen Heights, splitting their army. It is regarded as one of his greatest victories and a masterpiece of tactics. Austria withdrew from the Third Coalition and signed the Treaty of Pressburg, and in the following year the Holy Roman Empire was dissolved. The Russian army retreated to its own territory.
