Joseph Smith was born on 23 December 1805 in Sharon. An American religious leader, Smith founded the Latter Day Saint movement. He said that in the 1820s he received visions of God and Jesus Christ and later an angel who led him to golden plates that he translated into the Book of Mormon, published in 1830. He organized the Church of Christ, later the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and led his followers from New York to Ohio, Missouri and Illinois, where they built the city of Nauvoo. Opposition and conflicts followed him, especially over polygamy. He was killed by a mob while jailed in Carthage, Illinois.
