2025 German federal election

23 February 2025

The 2025 German federal election was held early, after the coalition government of Olaf Scholz collapsed in late 2024 following a dispute over economic policy. The conservative Christian Democratic Union and its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, led by Friedrich Merz, came first, while the far-right Alternative for Germany achieved its best result ever and became the second-largest party. The Social Democrats had their worst national result since the nineteenth century. Migration, the economy and security dominated the campaign. After talks, the CDU/CSU and the Social Democrats formed a coalition, and Merz was elected chancellor by the Bundestag in May, on a second ballot.
